Databases & Storage

Hi HN, For the past few months, I’ve been building UnisonDB — a log-native database where the Write-Ahead Log (WAL) is the database, not just a recovery mechanism. I started this because every time I needed data to flow — from core to edge, or between datacenters — I ended up gluing together a KV da

What is UnisonDB?

UnisonDB is an open-source, log-native database that treats the Write-Ahead Log as the primary data structure rather than solely a recovery mechanism. Built for scenarios requiring data flow across distributed systems—from core to edge infrastructure or between datacenters—UnisonDB provides real-time replication and synchronization capabilities. The database is designed specifically for AI agents and edge computing environments where local-first sync and instant data streaming are requirements. It functions similarly to a message bus, enabling reactive data operations across multiple nodes while supporting multimodal data storage. UnisonDB addresses a common architectural challenge: the need to continuously sync and replicate data without relying on multiple loosely-integrated tools. By making the log itself the database, it simplifies data consistency and replication patterns in distributed systems. The project is available on GitHub under an open-source license, making it accessible for developers building edge AI applications, distributed systems, and real-time data synchronization layers. UnisonDB is particularly suited for teams that need reliable data replication without the complexity of traditional database-plus-message-queue architectures.

Key Features

  • Log-native architecture where the Write-Ahead Log (WAL) is the core database, not just a recovery mechanism
  • Real-time replication and data synchronization across core systems, edge devices, and datacenters
  • Local-first sync capabilities designed for edge computing and distributed environments
  • Built-in support for multimodal data storage suited for AI agents and modern applications
  • Message bus-like replication for seamless data flow between distributed nodes
  • Reactive database designed for streaming data and instant synchronization
