Trayce
About a year ago I introduced Trayce to HN as the "network tab for docker containers". Now I have released a new version which adds an HTTP client. The idea is to combine network monitoring with an HTTP client to help developers interact with and debug web application servers. Think "
What is Trayce?
Trayce is a free, open-source desktop application that combines network monitoring for Docker containers with an integrated HTTP client. It enables developers to monitor and debug network traffic within containerized environments while simultaneously making API requests to test and interact with web services. The tool supports multiple protocols including HTTP(S), gRPC, MySQL, and Postgres, providing visibility into container communications. Its HTTP client component is fully featured and maintains compatibility with Bruno collections, allowing developers to work with existing API request libraries without vendor lock-in. Trayce distinguishes itself through several practical design choices: it operates entirely offline with files stored locally in a git-friendly format, requires no account creation, and maintains full interoperability with the Bruno API client ecosystem. The application features a modern UI built without browser-rendered graphics, designed for cross-platform use across desktop environments. The product targets developers who need to debug microservices architectures and containerized applications, particularly those working with Docker. It addresses the gap between network visibility and API testing by consolidating these workflows into a single tool. As a completely free and open-source project with no paid tiers, Trayce is accessible to individual developers and teams of any size.
