What is OpenTimes?

OpenTimes is a free, open-source database containing approximately 150 billion pre-computed travel times between United States Census geographies. The platform provides multi-modal routing data that enables users to analyze accessibility and transportation patterns across the country. The database serves researchers, urban planners, data analysts, and developers who need travel time information for projects involving accessibility analysis, site selection, demographic studies, or transportation planning. Rather than computing travel times on-demand, OpenTimes pre-calculates these values and stores them in Parquet format, allowing for efficient download and querying. Users can interact with the data through multiple channels: an interactive map for visualization and isochrone generation on the homepage, direct download of Parquet files for local analysis, or SQL queries against the dataset. This flexibility accommodates different use cases, from exploratory analysis to integration into larger data pipelines. The data is organized by Census geographies, making it compatible with standard demographic and geographic reference systems commonly used in research and planning.
