What is GeneGuessr?

GeneGuessr is a daily web-based guessing game that challenges players to identify human proteins based on their 3D molecular structures. Similar to Geoguessr and Wordle, the game presents a new protein structure each day that players must recognize by working through similarity clues related to protein domains, biological pathways, and molecular functions. The game is designed primarily for biologists and molecular biology professionals who have domain knowledge in protein structure and function. Players use contextual hints about a protein's characteristics to triangulate and guess the correct gene name, making it an educational tool that combines entertainment with professional expertise. GeneGuessr is built on PDBe Molstar, an open-source molecular visualization framework that renders 3D protein structures directly in the browser. The project is freely available and open source, allowing other developers to explore, modify, and contribute to the codebase. The game provides an accessible way for researchers and biology students to engage with real protein structural data while testing their knowledge of genomic and proteomic information.
