What is Chawan TUI web browser?
Chawan is a terminal-based web browser written in Nim that enables web browsing within command-line environments. It supports CSS rendering and JavaScript execution, with inline image display through sixel and kitty graphics protocols. The browser handles multiple protocols beyond HTTP(S), including SFTP, FTP, Gopher, and Gemini, making it suitable for accessing diverse internet resources from the terminal. Originally developed as a w3m clone, Chawan maintains a similar user interface while offering extended functionality. The application targets developers and advanced users who prefer terminal-based workflows or require web access in environments where graphical browsers are unavailable or impractical. Version 0.2.0 represents the first stable release with an MVP feature set and no known critical bugs. The software has minimal runtime dependencies including libssh2, libbrotli, and OpenSSL or LibreSSL, with streamlined requirements compared to earlier development versions. Binary distributions are available for AMD64 Linux systems, alongside source code for compilation on other platforms. Chawan provides practical web browsing capabilities within terminal constraints, with active development planned for improving layout rendering performance and UI refinements in future releases.
